Red Bull Big Wave Africa
July 26, 2008 / Dungeons, Cape Town, South Africa
Last year it was a training session only, but this year the Red Bull Big Wave Africa was back and ran in great conditions at the end of July. Welcome to shralp surf! episode 63. If you had to sum this contest up in a few words only, we would say: massive shifting peaks, ice cold water, great whites. As if the waves of Dungeons alone weren’t enough… The contest, which takes place off the coast of Hout Bay in Cape Town, South Africa, was dominated by the usual suspects. South African Grant “Twiggy” Baker, a former winner at Mavericks, used all his local knowledge to clinch first place ahead of Brazilian charger Carlos Burle and Californian Greg Long, winner of the biggest wave award at last year’s XXL.
Roaming editor - Kevin Olson
From the cold and kelp infested waters of Cape Town, we wander up the coast of South Africa into warmer waters. This footage comes from our roaming editor Kevin Olson and was filmed around Durban. If you have footage of yourself and you want to show it on shralp surf!, give us a shout. kosurfschool.com
Log Cabins - Team Hurley wipe out section
Oh it feels good to see that not only us, the little guys, wipe out, but also the gentlemen who get payed to surf. This was filmed at Log Cabins, on the North shore of Oahu last winter, right in front of the Hurley house. That’s it for this episode of shralp surf!, hope you liked it, we’ll be back in two weeks time.
